Also the legolas fight at laketown is more annoying to me than the barrel scene. At least the barrel scene is cute and unique in its stupidity. In my opinion the extended version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is well worth getting over the theatrical version. The theatrical version was around 2.5 hours, and the extended edition only adds 12 minutes to that, so it would be pretty hard to screw up the entire movie with them.
